“This mountain is very big and high. There is no one volcano on the land of Indonesia has an altitude as this mountain, except Jaya Wijaya mountain in Papua,” said the Director of Pusat Teknologi Inventarisasi Sumber Daya Alam, BPPT, Yusuf Surachman to the press in Jakarta.

The volcano located in Sunda trough, southwest Sumatera, 330 km away from Bengkulu in the depth of 5,9 km, and the summit of this mountain on 1.280 meters from sea level.

Even though a caldera was found in the mountain, as the characteristic of volcano, but, the volcanologists claim that they haven’t known yet the activaty level of this sub-marine volcano.

“However, a sub-marine volcano is very dangerous if it erupts” replied him.
The survey that using a high tech seismic ship, Geowave Champion, belonging to CGGV Veritas is the first ship in the world since they use the longest Streamer, 15 km longer than other seismic survey that have been carried out.

The goal of this survey is to identify the structure of deep geology (penetration till 50km) around Sunda trough, prism accretion, outer arc high, fore arc basin in Sumatera waters.

Since earthquake and tsunami at the end of 2004, and followed by other big earthquakes occurred, there have been so many structure alteration in Sumatera waters, made many scientists interest to pursue research and observation.

The expert team from Indonesia, US and France, then collaborate on geology structure mapping to conduct comprehensive understanding of sources and mechanisms of quake triggering tsunami using deep seismic image.
