Demography
Base on note, at the year 1986 total population is 22.034 people. But, at 1996 the population in the Mt. Karangetang high risk disaster area decreased to 20.088 people.
People’s living around side coast earns their living as traditional fishermen, and the people who live at highland are farmers. One of the high quality nutmeg producers in east Indonesia is Siau island, except Banda Neira Island. Besides nutmeg, other agriculture produced is copra and clove. No paddy-field there since the irrigation system is using cistern method (dependent on rain water for irrigation), besides its soil is hilly. Hence, the staple food is imported from Manado / Minahasa.

How to Get the Summit
Before the year 1980, the hiking track was starting from Tarunane village, Ulu Siau, south east of the summit. This track passed Kali kahetang valley, But, after the valley filled by lava and has been attacked by magma at the year 1988, then the trekking altered to South-West direction, that’s from Salili or Beong by following west valley from the back of Arengkambing. This hiking track then has been closed due to lava sediment has flows at 1992. New hiking track opened at 1998, starting from Batubulan to the south of summit. To get Batubulan can be reached by boat from Ulu Siau takes about 1 hour, and the hiking itself needs 5 hours on walk.
